What happened today:
Trump is implicated. A witness in the Manhattan district attorney's investigation into the Trump Organization told prosecutors that Donald Trump once personally offered to pay school costs for employees' family members in place of a raise in order to avoid paying taxes, The Daily Beast reported. The revelation could bolster any charges that prosecutors could bring against Trump.
Europe's devastating floods. At least 100 people have died and more than 1,000 people are missing as floods hit Germany and Belgium this week. Houses collapsed and streets turned into rivers, trapping people on their roofs. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there could be “many” more deaths.
Heartless hackers. Hackers have been stealing the identities of victims who were killed in the Florida condo building collapse, an official said. “It's re-victimizing all our victims,” Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told Insider, “and we are not going to stand for that.” Officials told families of the victims who died in the collapse to check on their credit and contact the Social Security offices, Burkett said.
“African American isn't the only Black, you know?” Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka hit back at those who criticized her decision to represent Japan instead of the US at this summer's Olympics. Speaking in her new Netflix docuseries, she said: “So I don't choose America and suddenly people are like, ‘Your Black card is revoked.' … I feel like people really don't know the difference between nationality and race because there's a lot of Black people in Brazil, but they're Brazilian.”
Sad sandwiches. Subway kicked off an ambitious menu revamp this week with a promotion giving away 1 million 6-inch Turkey Cali Fresh subs on July 13. But some franchisees across the US are now saying that the promotion was a flop, as fewer people than expected showed up to claim a free sandwich. Subway told Insider that the “sampling” event “beat” expectations.
That's all for now. See you Monday.
